World’s Oldest Orangutan Turns 63

Bella is the world’s oldest living orangutan in captivity. On April 16, Bella celebrated her 63rd birthday. Bella is a Sumatran orangutan and is estimated to be born in 1961. Ever since she was collected from the wild in 1964, she has lived at Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany. She was given a birthday cake made of soft-boiled rice and various fruits, which she shared with Berani, one of her adopted children.

Orangutans typically live in the wild up to 35-40 years and normally up to 50 years in captivity.

India’s Snow Leopard Population Estimated at 718 in First-Ever Survey

According to a massive five year survey conducted between 2019 and 2023 and the first nationwide scientific count of snow leopards in India, there are 718 snow leopards in India. This survey was conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India along with snow leopard range states, the Nature Conservation Foundation, and World Wildlife Fund.

They monitored a vast and remote mountain habitat of 120,000 square kilometres across the trans- Himalayan region, using many cameras. The survey found two-thirds of the cats in Ladakh, with the rest in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Discovered A New Tiny Species Of Dinosaur In Japan

Recently, scientists from Japan and Canada have discovered a new species of a tiny dinosaur in Japan. According to experts, this tiny dinosaur was related to the triceratops and was smaller than an average dog! This tiny dinosaur measured around 3 feet in length and weighed around 10kg.

This new species has been named Sasayamagnomus saegusai and it belonged to a group of plant-eating dinosaurs called ceratopsians. The species thrived in the Northern Hemisphere from the late Jurassic period through to the Cretaceous period. Scientists say the discovery is the furthest east that a ceratopsian dinosaur has been found.

A Strange Team Of Hunter: Octopus And Fish!

A recent study conducted by the scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour in Germany, has discovered that octopuses and fish work together when hunting for food.

Octopuses usually hunt alone. However, they noticed that octopuses team up with different types of fish to catch prey like shellfish and crabs. The fish helps to find a good hunting spot while the octopus decides when to attack. Experts suggest that this joint effort leads to better success compared to either species hunting alone. They also pushed each other around to keep the group in order and the experts were able to film octopuses punching fish to keep them in their place.

Medicine Ideas From Self-Medicating Gorillas

Researchers in Gabon have discovered that gorillas might help us humans discover future medicines and drugs. They observed and studied the tropical plants that were eaten by the wild western lowland gorillas and also used by local human healers to treat people. The researchers found and identified that four of such tropical plants had medicinal properties.

The researchers tested these plants in a laboratory and found that these plants were high in antioxidants and antimicrobials. This means that they have special chemical properties that help them fight germs and some superbugs. One of the plants was particularly good at treating a tough germ called E.coli. Great apes are known to self-medicate by selecting plants with healing properties.
