Toxic Smog in North India

Recently, New Delhi has been battling with a toxic smog. The skyrocketing and unsafe levels of the Air Quality Index were shocking. The New Delhi Air Quality Index measured at a “hazardous” level, causing the Delhi Government to launch stage IV of its Graded Response Action Plan (“GRAP Stage IV”).

These are emergency measures to address air pollution. As on the date of printing this Issue, in accordance with the order of the Supreme Court these GRAP Stage IV will continue to be in place until December 2. Initially, the schools in New Delhi moved to online learning and then were ordered to be in hybrid mode, allowing students to attend classes either physically or online.

India in Top 10 Climate Performers

India has ranked 10th in the Climate Change Performance Index (“CCPI 2025”), a global assessment of over 60 countries’ efforts to combat climate change. One of the main reasons for India’s high ranking was because it had the lowest emission per person when compared to the major economies.

CCPI 2025 has left the first three places empty, as no country performed well enough across all index categories to achieve an overall “very high” rating. Only 22 of the 64 surveyed countries, including the European Union, were on track with the 2015 Paris Agreement goal of keeping global temperature rise within 2°C and making efforts to contain it to 1.5°C. Denmark leads the rankings at fourth place, followed by the Netherlands and the UK. China and the US ranked 55th and 57th respectively, remaining among the poorest performers.

What is the CCPI 2025?

The CCPI 2025 is a climate performance index published by well known think tanks. It helps people see which countries are doing a good job at taking care of the planet and which ones need to do better. It’s like a report card for countries based on their efforts to fight climate change. The experts look at countries’ performance and give them scores on the following four main areas: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, climate policy, and energy use.

World’s First Sabre-Toothed Cat Mummy Discovered

In 2020, a mummy of a 35,000-year-old sabre-toothed cat was discovered by chance by a group of explorers looking for mammoth tusks in eastern Siberia. This was the first time ever that a sabre-toothed cats’ mummy was found with its fur intact, allowing scientists to learn more about its muscles, skin, and fur. Prior to this discovery, scientists only knew about these big cats through skeletons. The three-week old kitten was found frozen in the permafrost near the Badyarikha River in Siberia. Scientists say that finding mummified mammals from that period in history is very rare. By studying the mummy with CT scans, the researchers were able to identify it as a Homotherium saber-toothed cat.

Homotherium was the last kind of saber-toothed cat known to have existed.

Homotherium adults were about the size of a lion, but thinner, and good at running long distances.

What was the Sabre-Tooth Cat?

Sabre-toothed cats were large meat-eating mammals that lived thousands of years ago. This top predator lived in the prehistoric world after the dinosaurs died out. They have been named sabre-toothed cats because of their long, swordlike canine teeth. They died out around the end of the last Ice Age.
