Sumit Antil Breaks Paralympic Record; Wins Gold

Sumit Antil becomes the first Indian man to successfully defend a Paralympic Gold 

Sumit Antil has won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 class at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games,  becoming the first male Indian para-athlete to defend his title in the Paralympics. He achieved the feat with a new Paralympic record of 70.59m at the Stade de France. Sumit Antil won a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Sumit Antil began with a new Paralympic record of 69.11m in his first attempt, which broke his own previous record of 68.55m. Sumit Antil then bettered it with the eventual winner of 70.59m on his second attempt, making it yet another record. His fifth attempt landed at 69.04m, again better than the Tokyo 2020 mark.

What is the F64 category?

The F64 category is designated for athletes with lower limb impairments, including those who compete with prosthetics or have differences in leg length.

Yogesh Kathuniya Wins Silver in Paris 2024 Paralympics

Yogesh Kathuniya repeats Tokyo success, wins silver in Paris

Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in men’s discus throw F56 event to become a double medalist at the Paralympics. He had won silver in Tokyo as well. He won with a season-best throw of 42.22m at Stade de France.

What is the F56 category?

The F56 classification covers limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power and impaired range of movement.

Once Again A Silver Medal for Nishad Kumar

Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in men’s high jump T47 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.Nishad Kumar’s highest jump at the event was 2.04m. Roderick Townsend of the US won the gold medal with a highest jump of 2.12m. Nishad Kumar also won a silver in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. He had jumped 2.06m then in Tokyo.

Preeti Pal Creates History 

First Indian Woman to Win Two Para-Athletics Medals 

Preethi Pal has become the first Indian to win two Paralympic medals in a track event. Preethi Pal won a bronze medal in the women’s T35 100m event with a personal best time of 14.21 seconds. Apart from it being the country’s first track medal ever at the Games, Preethi Pal’s bronze is also India’s first medal from para-athletics at Paris 2024. She also won a bronze in the women’s 200 T35 class.She clocked a personal best timing of 30.01s in the final to take the third position.

What is the T35 category?

T35 classification is meant for athletes who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis, as well as cerebral palsy.

Sheetal Devi And Rakesh Kumar Wins Bronze Medal 

India’s Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar clinched the bronze medal in the mixed compound open archery event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Sheetal Dev, at 17, became India’s youngest Paralympic medallist in history. She was the only female armless archer at Paris 2024.

Did You Know? In the history of the Paralympic Games, this was India’s second medal in archery. India’s first-ever Paralympics medal in archery was won by Harvinder Singh, when he clinched the bronze in the Tokyo 2020 men’s individual recurve open event.
