No YouTube accounts for kids under 16 in Australia

Australia has decided to make a new rule to protect children online by banning children under 16 from having accounts on YouTube. This means that children younger than 16 will not be able to create their own YouTube accounts, although they can still watch videos without an account. This change comes because many children have been exposed to harmful content on YouTube, and the government wants to keep them safer.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said this rule is to help parents and protect children from negative experiences on social media. The ban will also apply to other platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter), and will start on December 10, 2025. Social media companies that do not follow these rules could face fines up to nearly 50 million Australian dollars. Some kinds of online apps, such as games, messaging, education, and health services, are not included in the ban because they are considered safer for children.
