Climate Change Makes Kids Sick: New Study Warns India

Global warming has a lot of different effects. However, little did we know that it’s effects would start showing on kids, this soon. A recent study shows some harmful effects on kids due to climate change that seem to be rather permanent and quite daunting. The Junior Age has all the details for you!

Know How Climate Change Affects The Kids And Makes Them Sick:

A new study shows climate change is making people sick – especially children and women in India’s rural areas. Hot weather and bad rains hit them hardest. Scientists looked at 575 districts and found kids in the most affected places are more likely to be too thin, too short, or too weak from lack of food.

The study says underweight rates for children are 25% higher in high-risk districts. This makes it harder for India to end hunger and keep everyone healthy. Published in PLOS One, the research comes from the Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi. It shows climate change already hurts basic health and slows India’s big goals for a better future.

What the Study Discovered:

Researchers looked at health data from over 150,000 children and 447,000 women.

  • Around 80% of India’s people live in areas hit often by climate stress, like heavy rain, rising heat, floods, and cyclones.
  • Across India, 37% of kids are stunted (not growing tall enough), and 33% are underweight – but climate change makes it worse.

Why This Climate Change Matters for India

Heat waves, changing rains, and more bug-spread diseases hurt health in places like Delhi, Mumbai, and Rajasthan. These mix with poor homes and low education, making weak spots even weaker. Without action, climate shocks could stop progress on feeding kids and caring for moms.
