Bronze For Deepthi Jeevanji At Paris 2024 Paralympics

Deepthi Jeevanji won a bronze medal in the women’s 400m T20 event, becoming the first intellectually impaired Indian athlete to win a Paralympic medal. She clocked 55.82 seconds to secure a podium finish in her debut Games appearance.

T35 classification is meant for athletes who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis, as well ascerebral palsy.

Indian Para-Athletes Rule High Jump

Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men’s high jump T63 class. Sharad Kumar soared to a height of 1.88m in the final. This was Sharad Kumar’s second Paralympic medal. He won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Mariyappan Thangavelu jumped to a height of 1.85m, winning the bronze medal. Mariyappan Thangavelu also achieved the historic feat of becoming the first Indian para-athlete to win medals at three consecutive Games. He won the gold medal at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020.

What is the T63 category?

The T63 classification is specifically designed for athletes with a single through knee or above knee limb deficiency.

Suhas Yathiraj Wins Silver 

Suhas Yathiraj once again won a silver medal once in the men’s singles badminton SL4 class after he lost the final at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. He had won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics as well.

What is the SL4 category?

Under SL4 category athletes compete standing with less severe impairment than in the SL3 class. SL4 athletes demonstrate lower limb impairment and minor balance problems walking or running.

Nitesh Kumar Wins Gold In Badminton

Nitesh Kumar won a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, as he defeated Daniel Bethell of Great Britain in men’s badminton singles SL3 final. This is India’s third Paralympic medal in badminton. Incidentally, all of India’s badminton medals at the Paralympics have been gold. In the 2020 Tokyo Games, Pramod Bhagat (SL3) and Krishna Nagar (SH6) clinched gold medals.

SL3 is a classification for players who have moderate mobility challenges on one side of their body, both legs, or due to limb absence.

Sumit Antil Breaks Paralympic Record; Wins Gold

Sumit Antil becomes the first Indian man to successfully defend a Paralympic Gold 

Sumit Antil has won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 class at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games,  becoming the first male Indian para-athlete to defend his title in the Paralympics. He achieved the feat with a new Paralympic record of 70.59m at the Stade de France. Sumit Antil won a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Sumit Antil began with a new Paralympic record of 69.11m in his first attempt, which broke his own previous record of 68.55m. Sumit Antil then bettered it with the eventual winner of 70.59m on his second attempt, making it yet another record. His fifth attempt landed at 69.04m, again better than the Tokyo 2020 mark.

What is the F64 category?

The F64 category is designated for athletes with lower limb impairments, including those who compete with prosthetics or have differences in leg length.
