Barbie Launches First Ever ‘Diwali Doll’

Ahead of the Hindu festival of lights-Diwali, Mattel (the company that makes Barbie), has released a special Diwali Barbie Doll.  This Diwali Barbie has been made in collaboration with Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre and will feature traditional Indian elements.

Understanding Short-Sightedness: One in Three Children at Risk

According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, children’s eyesight is steadily getting worse. The researchers have found that one in three young people are short-sighted or unable to see things in the distance clearly.

The researchers analysed 276 studies involving 54 lakh participants aged 5-19 years from 50 countries. They also found a rise from 24% of young people with myopia in 1990 to 36% in 2023. The researchers have warned that too much screen time may explain children’s worsening eyesight. They have advised that children should do more physical activity outdoors.

Short-sightedness or myopia describes a condition in which it is difficult to see objects that are far away.

What are the signs of short-sightedness?

According to eye experts, the following are some of the signs that indicate myopia:

Difficulty reading words from a distance, such as reading the white-board at school; 

Sitting close to the TV or computer, or holding a mobile phone or tablet close to the face; and Getting headaches and rubbing the eyes a lot.

End Of An Era! Rafael Nadal Announces Retirement

Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced his retirement from professional tennis. He is 38-years-old. Rafael Nadal’s final tournament will be the Davis Cup finals this November in Malaga.

He has won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record 14 French Open titles. He is often referred to as the “King of Clay” due to his dominance on clay courts, particularly at the French Open. Rafael Nadal won a gold medal in men’s singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and also won a gold medal in doubles in 2016 Rio Olympics.

 

Rafael Nadal plays with his left hand, which is quite rare in tennis. This gives him a unique playing style!

Two Indian Navy Women Set On A Global Voyage

Two women officers of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, have gone on a challenging expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. They started their expedition from Goa and hope to cover 21,600 nautical miles over eight months.

Their journey was flagged off by the Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi from the Naval Ocean Sailing Node, INS Mandovi near Panaji, as both the officers sailed on the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini. The two officers are expected to return to Goa in May 2025.

India’s Maiden Mission To Venus

The Indian Space Research Organisation is preparing for its first mission to Venus, known as the Venus Orbiter Mission (“VOM”) or Shukrayaan-1. The Indian space agency has announced that the spacecraft will take a total of 112 days to travel to Venus and is scheduled to launch in March, 2028.

Shukrayaan-1 will mark India’s first foray into exploring the planet. The orbiter is expected to reach its destination in July, 2028. VOM will study the atmosphere, surface, and geological features of Venus using many sophisticated scientific instruments.
