Fifteen-year-old Heman Bekele from Virginia, US is a teen scientist named TIME magazine’s 2024 Kid of the Year for inventing a soap bar that treats skin cancer. This bar of soap contains imiquimod, a medicine which typically comes in the form of a cream and can help destroy tumours.

“It’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life,” the 15-year-old told Time. “That’s the reason I started this all in the first place,” he added. Heman Bekele has been seeing the effects of the sun on people’s skin since he was a young boy growing up in Ethiopia. He noticed many people working in the sun without protecting their skin. He has further said that “When I came to America, I realised how big a problem the sun and UV radiation is when you’re exposed to it for a long time”.

Five-year-old Teghbir Singh from Punjab has become the youngest ever from Asia to scale the 5,895m Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Tanzania, Africa.
