What Is An Earthquake?

Earthquake is a natural disaster that occurs when the tectonic plates crash into or brush against each other. Earthquakes cause the ground to shake and large cracks open up in the Earth’s surface. Earthquakes are more common in certain countries due them being on the edge of tectonic plates.

What Causes an Earthquake?

The tectonic plates are always moving, but sometimes they get stuck. This non-stop movement causes stress on Earth’s crust. When the stresses get too large, it leads to cracks called faults. When tectonic plates move, it also causes movements at the faults. An earthquake is the sudden movement of Earth’s crust at a fault line.

Types of Earthquakes You Should Know About:

There are four different types of earthquakes: tectonic, volcanic, collapse and explosion.

A tectonic earthquake is one that happens when the earth’s crust breaks down as a result of geological forces acting on nearby plates and rocks, which change their physical and chemical composition.

A volcanic earthquake is any earthquake that results from tectonic forces which occur in conjunction with volcanic activity.

A collapse earthquake are small earthquakes in underground caverns and mines that are caused by seismic waves produced from the explosion of rock on the surface.

An explosion earthquake is an earthquake that is the result of the detonation of a nuclear and/or chemical device.

What is an Epicentre?

The ground above where an earthquake starts is called the epicentre. An earthquake’s most intense shaking is often felt near the epicentre. However, the vibrations from an earthquake

can usually be felt and detected thousands of miles away from the epicentre.

How are Earthquakes Measured?

Earthquakes are measured using seismographs, which monitor the seismic waves that travel through the Earth after an earthquake strikes.

Scientists use something called the Moment Magnitude scale to measure how strong an earthquake is. This scale measures the energy that is released by the earthquake which makes it very accurate.

In the past, scientists used something called the Richter scale which measured the size of the seismic waves.

What is an earthquake zone?

An earthquake zone is defined as the zone on the earth’s surface around which the majority of earthquakes occur. It is also known as the seismic zone or earthquake belts.

Where Earthquakes Happen?

Where tectonic plates collide, there are earthquakes along the fault lines. Around 80% of earthquakes happen near the Pacific Ocean’s rim. The region is a meeting place for numerous tectonic plates and is known as the Ring of Fire due to the abundance of volcanoes there.

What Can You Do To Stay Safe in an Earthquake?

Usually earthquakes last only 10 to 30 seconds. During an earthquake it is advisable to get to a safe place fast. Keep the following things in mind:

If you are indoors:

Get down on your hands and knees and crawl to your shelter.
Take cover underneath a sturdy table, desk, or bed. Cover your head and neck with your arms. If furniture isn’t nearby, crouch down on your knees with your arms over your head and neck next to an interior wall. (Don’t stand under a doorway—they can easily collapse.)
Stay away from glass windows, doors, and walls.

If you are outdoors:

Stay away from tall buildings and trees.
Find a space spot and stay there until safe

What To Do After An Earthquake?

Once the earthquake has passed, look for any wounds. Stay tuned for warnings from the local authorities. Be ready for any possible aftershocks. First aid kits must be used to tend to persons with minor injuries such as bleeding and bruises. Whereas seriously injured individuals must not be moved until they are out of danger and proper medical help has arrived. One must stay away from downed power lines and any object or appliance in contact with it.

Size and Appearance:

Tigers are the largest members of the cat family (Felidae). They can grow up to 11 feet (3.3 meters) in length, excluding the tail, which can add another 3 to 4 feet (1 meter). Adult tigers can weigh between 220 to 660 pounds (100 to 300 kilograms). Their iconic orange fur with black stripes provides excellent camouflage in their natural habitats.

Subspecies:

There are currently six recognized tiger subspecies: Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, Sumatran tiger, Malayan tiger, Indochinese tiger, and South China tiger. Each subspecies has its unique characteristics and is adapted to specific regions across Asia.

Habitat and Distribution:

Tigers inhabit a diverse range of habitats, including dense forests, mangrove swamps, grasslands, and even high-altitude regions. Tigers have been excessively hunted for their fur and other body parts that are used in traditional medicine by many people. As people have developed land for needs such as farming and logging, the habitat for tigers has also drastically decreased.

Tigers are mostly nocturnal (more active at night) and are ambush predators that rely on the camouflage their stripes provide to stalk prey.

Origins of Oscars

Academy Awards, commonly known as Oscars, were founded in 1927. It is a prestigious award that recognises personalities in the movie industry. It is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The award presentation was first started in 1929, and winners since then receive a gold-plated statuette commonly called Oscar.

Every year winners are chosen from the following 24 categories: best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, production design, editing, original score, original song, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects, foreign-language film, animated feature film, animated short, live-action short, documentary feature, and documentary short.

The other awards include scientific and technical awards, special achievement awards, honorary awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (for excellence in producing), and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (for technological contributions), although these are not necessarily awarded annually.

History of the Statuette

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer art director Cedric Gibbons is credited with designing the statue. He is believed to have sketched the statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film, on a linen napkin. Subsequently, American sculptor George was commissioned to create the original statuette based on this sketch. Earlier, it was cast in bronze with gold plating and later, was made of plastic because of the shortage of metal during World War II. Currently, the statues are made of gold-plated britannium, which stands 13.5 inches and weighs 3.8 kg.

There are many theories as to how the statuette got its name, Oscar. One of the most popular theories is that Actress Bette Davis observed that the backside of the statuette looked like that of her husband Harmon Oscar Nelson.

Eligibility Requirements Of Oscars

A film must be publicly exhibited for paid admission for at least one week at a commercial theatre in Los Angeles county between January 1 and midnight of December 31 of a year, to be eligible for the award in that year. Only foreign-language films, which are submitted by their country of origin, are exempted from this eligibility criteria. Documentaries and short films have different eligibility requirements and are officially submitted by their producers, whereas music awards require the musical artist to file a submission form.

India Shines At Oscars 2023

1. Netflix documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, has scripted history by winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short category at the 95th Academy Awards. It is the first Indian documentary to win an Oscar. The Elephant Whisperers tells the story of an indigenous couple named Bomman and Bellie as they care for two orphaned baby elephants. The film explores the precious bond between the animals and their caretakers.

The film was competing against Haulout, How Do You Measure a Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger At The Gate.

Interesting Facts –

Director Kartiki Gonsalves followed the story of the elephants and their caretakers for five years. She shot a total of about 450 hours of camera footage for this short 41 minute documentary.

The names of the two orphaned calves featured in this documentary are Raghu and Ammu.

The caretaker couple and the two elephants live in Theppakadu Elephant camp in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.

2. Telugu language song, Naatu Naatu from the film RRR has won the Academy Award for the Best Original Song. It has become the first song ever from any Indian film to win in the Best Song category. Naatu Naatu has been composed by MM Keeravani and penned by Chandra Bose. The song is sung by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who also performed the song live at the 95th Academy Awards stage. Music composer MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose accepted the award.

Interesting Facts.

The song is a work of art that took a shoot for around 17 days in the palace, with about 1,000 artists working each day. It was shot in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, in August 2021.

The song was shot in the presidential palace of Ukraine at Kyiv, which is officially called as Mariinsky Palace. This is where the president of the country usually receives his counterparts.

Naatu Naatu is also the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in January 2023.

The award plays an important role in the rise of the winner significantly as he or she gets better work offers, pay hike, and media recognition. The event takes place in Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
