Amaravati Becomes The Official Capital Of Andhra Pradesh

After nearly a decade of uncertainty, the question of Andhra Pradesh’s capital city has finally been settled. The government has officially confirmed that Amaravati will serve as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, bringing clarity to a major administrative issue that has been debated since the state was reorganised in 2014. The decision marks an important moment for the state, as leaders now focus on developing Amaravati as the centre of governance, administration and planning.

Amaravati has been confirmed as Andhra Pradesh’s capital

On April 6, India’s President Droupadi Murmu officially declared Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The announcement came after discussions within the state government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu about the future of the capital region. It had originally been selected as the capital in 2014, after the historic Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 divided the former state into two parts. The reorganisation created the new state of Telangana, with Hyderabad becoming its capital. Following the split, Andhra Pradesh needed a new administrative centre, and Amaravati was chosen as the planned capital city.

However, over the years, the capital issue became the subject of political debate and changing proposals, creating uncertainty about where the state’s main government institutions would finally be located. With the latest declaration confirming the city’s status, the state government is expected to continue plans to develop the city as the administrative and governance hub of Andhra Pradesh.

Amaravati isn’t a new name. It was the capital of the powerful Satavahana dynasty nearly 2,000 years.
