India has witnessed a major political milestone as Narendra Modi has become the longest-serving head of government in the country’s history. The record counts the total time he has served as an elected leader, including his years as Chief Minister of Gujarat and later as Prime Minister of India.

Narendra Modi first became Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 and led the state for more than a decade. In May 2014, he became the 14th Prime Minister of India, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2024, continuing his leadership at the national level. During his time in office, Modi has overseen several major national initiatives, including programmes related to digital development, infrastructure, financial inclusion, and space missions.
