Elephant: The Largest Land Mammal

Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world. They are mostly found in Africa and Asia. There are three different species of elephant – the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant. The African elephant is slightly larger than the Asian elephant and they have certain distinctive features.

Interesting Facts on Elephants

The African Forest elephant is now listed as Critically Endangered, the African Savannah elephant and the Asian elephant are now listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. For more details refer to the Special Report on page 4.

Did you know that the African elephants have large cars shaped like the continent of Africa? Whereas, the Asian elephants have smaller ears shaped like India.

The elephant tusks are enlarged incisor teeth that usually appear when the elephant is 2 years old. The elephant tusks never stop growing.

Female elephants live in a herd with other female elephants and calves. Male ele-phants usually live alone.

Research suggests that elephants can recognise themselves in a mirror. This ability to distinguish oneself from others is seen in humans and chimpanzees.

It’s crazy but true that elephants spend 12 to 18 hours a day eating grass, plants and fruits. Elephants are herbivorous.

Giraffe : The Tallest Land Animal

Giraffes are gentle mammals. Giraffes are commonly found in the dry savannah region of Africa. An adult giraffe can grow up to 5.5m tall, that’s taller than 3 adult humans put together. Giraffes are herbivores and can eat more than 40kg of food in a day. Their long necks help them reach taller trees to eat leaves and also helps them to look out for their enemies.

1. Giraffes are social animals and typically live in a group of 15 members, called Tower. 

2. The tongue of a giraffe is more than 18 inches long. 

3. Giraffes can run at a speed of 56km per hour, faster than a horse. 

4. At the time of birth, a baby giraffe called calf, is 6 feet tall. They can stand and walk as soon as they are born. 

5. Even though a giraffe has a very long neck, it has only 7 neck bones. Did you know that even humans have 7 neck bones?

Medicine Ideas From Self-Medicating Gorillas

Researchers in Gabon have discovered that gorillas might help us humans discover future medicines and drugs. They observed and studied the tropical plants that were eaten by the wild western lowland gorillas and also used by local human healers to treat people. The researchers found and identified that four of such tropical plants had medicinal properties.

The researchers tested these plants in a laboratory and found that these plants were high in antioxidants and antimicrobials. This means that they have special chemical properties that help them fight germs and some superbugs. One of the plants was particularly good at treating a tough germ called E.coli. Great apes are known to self-medicate by selecting plants with healing properties.

Three New Extinct Kangaroo Species Named 

Scientists from Flinders University, based in Adelaide, believe that they have discovered three new species of kangaroos that lived millions of years ago. This finding is based on the discovery of several nearly complete kangaroo fossil skeletons in Lake Callabonna in southern Australia.

They even found that one of the species was double the size of the biggest kangaroos alive today, and twice the size of a human! The three new species belong to the extinct Pro- temnodon-giant kangaroo and are known as Protemnodon viator, Protemnodon mamkurraand, and the Protemnodon dawsonae. The Protemnodon viator weighed up to 170 kg, double the weight of the heaviest present day red males. They are believed to have lived around five million to 40,000 years ago.

Reliance Foundation Rescues Thousands Of Animals : Vantara

Vantara programme, conceptualised by Anant Ambani. This initiative is first of its kind in India and aims to rescue, care for, treat and rehabilitate injured, abused, and threatened animals in India and abroad. The Vantara facility is spread over 3,000 acres and is located within Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery complex, Gujarat. Vantara aims to lead conservation efforts in a forest-like environment that has been created for rescued animals.

More than 200 elephants and other animals like reptiles and birds have been rescued and are a part of this facility. Animals like rhinos, leopards, and crocodiles have also been rehabilitated. The Vanatara facility also includes a conservation centre with modern medical facilities like state-of-the-art healthcare and hospitals. Recently, Vantara has also taken part in foreign rescue missions in countries like Mexico, Venezuela etc. Reliance Industries. Limited is a large private sector corporation in India.
