Four Places In India Set To Get New Names

Place names often carry deep links to history, language and local identity. Across India, governments sometimes update official names so they better reflect cultural roots or traditional meanings. In recent developments between 2024 and 2026, governments in Kerala and Rajasthan approved proposals to rename four places, aiming to highlight historical, linguistic and religious connections linked to each location. The decisions involve one state and three towns whose new names may soon officially change once required approvals and notifications are completed.

New names proposed for places in Kerala and Rajasthan:

Kerala is now Keralam

The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution proposing that the state’s English name be changed from Kerala to Keralam. The word Keralam comes from the Malayalam language and is believed to mean Land of coconuts or Land of the Chera people, referring to the ancient Chera dynasty that once ruled the region. The proposal has been sent to the central government for approval, which is required before the change can become official.

Mount Abu is now Aburaj

In Rajasthan, the state’s well-known hill station Mount Abu has been approved for renaming as Aburaj, meaning Kingdom of Abu. The name reflects the area’s ancient history connected to the Aravalli Range and the famous Dilwara Temples. The change will come into effect after administrative procedures and an official gazette notification.

Kaman is now Kamvan

The town of Kaman in Rajasthan will be renamed Kamvan, highlighting its links to the Braj region, which is closely associated with stories of Lord Krishna. According to tradition, Kamvan was one of the 12 sacred forests of Braj Mandal and is sometimes described as Adi-Vrindavan, believed to be connected to Krishna’s childhood legends.

Jahazpur is now Yagyapur

The historic town of Jahazpur in Bhilwara district will be renamed Yagyapur. The name comes from the Sanskrit word Yagya, which refers to a sacred fire ritual in Hindu tradition. Officials say the new name aims to highlight the town’s spiritual history, ancient forts and historic ruins.
