Koalas depend on forests and woodlands for everything. Trees give them food, shelter, and safety. When forests are cut down to make space for buildings, farms, and roads, koalas are left with nowhere to go. When trees disappear, koalas struggle to survive. They have fewer places to sleep and eat. Many are forced to cross busy roads to find food, which can lead to injuries or death. Without enough eucalyptus leaves, koalas can also become hungry or sick.
Bushfires are another major threat. In hot and dry weather, fires spread quickly and burn large areas of forest. These fires destroy koala habitats in a short time, leaving animals trapped or homeless. After fires, it can take years for trees to grow back.
Scientists warn that koalas and their habitats need urgent protection. Because of habitat loss and other threats, the koala is now listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This means the species could become endangered if action is not taken soon.
