End of an Era: India Discontinues Registered Post After 50 Years of Service

The Indian Postal Department has announced the discontinuation of its iconic Registered Post service starting September 1, 2025. From September 1, 2025, the iconic Registered Post service will be merged with and upgraded into Speed Post. For over 50 years, Registered Post helped people send important letters and documents safely—such as job offers, legal papers, and government messages—and was known for its trustworthiness and affordability. This change is part of a strategic integration aimed at modernising the postal system. Speed Post is faster, offers online tracking, and provides proof of delivery, though it costs slightly more than Registered Post.

The Indian Postal Department assures that essential features—such as secure delivery, tracking, and proof of receipt—will continue with Speed Post. This initiative aims to provide faster, more efficient service while preserving the accountability that customers valued in Registered Post. Though this marks the end of Registered Post as a separate service, the postal system is moving forward with newer, faster ways to send important letters and packages, combining reliability with modern technology.
