Some places are so special that the whole world agrees they should be protected forever. These places could be ancient cities, stunning mountains, historic buildings, or natural wonders. They are called UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and now one country has more of them than anywhere else on Earth. Italy has become the world’s UNESCO Heritage Capital, with a record 61 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it the country with the highest number of protected heritage sites in the world.
Italy becomes the world leader in UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Italy reached this amazing milestone after UNESCO added the Domus de Janas, ancient rock-cut tombs in Sardinia, to its World Heritage List. This takes Italy’s total to 61 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, putting it ahead of China, which has 60.
Some of Italy’s famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites include:
- Historic Centre of Rome
- The Colosseum
- Venice and its Lagoon
- Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata
- The Leaning Tower of Pisa
- The Dolomites
- The Amalfi Coast
- Historic Centre of Florence
- Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes
What’s new?
The newest UNESCO site is the Domus de Janas, which means Houses of the Fairies. These are ancient tombs carved into rock over 5,000 years ago in Sardinia. They help archaeologists learn about the lives and traditions of some of Europe’s earliest farming communities. With 61 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Italy now holds the world record and continues to protect its incredible history, culture, and natural wonders for future generations.
What is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place recognised for its exceptional cultural, historical, scientific, or natural value. Countries work together with UNESCO to protect these sites so they can be enjoyed by people around the world for many years to come.
Did you know? India has 44 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Taj Mahal, Kaziranga National Park and the Maratha Military Landscapes, which were added in 2025.
