Some events are so vast that they can be seen from space. Others are so powerful that they bring millions together through faith, tradition, and belief. The Maha Kumbh Mela is both. Held once in many generations, it transforms an ordinary riverbank into a living, breathing city of devotion. This year, the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is set to become one of the biggest human gatherings the world has ever witnessed.
The World’s Largest Public Gathering: Maha Kumbh Mela
What is the Maha Kumbh Mela?
The Maha Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest public and religious gathering. It is taking place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26. Millions of pilgrims are expected to attend, with estimates reaching up to 400 million people over the course of the festival.
The Kumbh Mela is a Hindu festival held once every 12 years. However, the Maha Kumbh is far rarer. It happens only once every 144 years, making this year’s event especially historic.
Why is this year extra special?
This Maha Kumbh is marked by a rare alignment of the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. According to Hindu belief, this cosmic alignment makes the festival even more powerful and spiritually significant.
The festival takes place at the Sangam, the sacred meeting point of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Worshippers believe that bathing in these holy waters during the Kumbh Mela washes away sins and purifies the soul.
A city that appears overnight
To host this massive gathering, authorities build a temporary city along the riverbanks. Thousands of tents, roads, bridges, toilets, hospitals, kitchens, and security centres are set up just for the event. Once the festival ends, this entire city disappears, leaving the riverbanks empty again.

The Kumbh Mela: a timeless tradition
The Kumbh Mela is an ancient festival, celebrated for thousands of years. According to Hindu mythology, gods and demons once churned the ocean of milk to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. During this legendary event, drops of Amrit fell at four places on Earth: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. These sacred sites are where the Kumbh Mela is held. Pilgrims gather at these locations to take a holy dip, believing it brings spiritual cleansing and enlightenment.
The Kumbh Mela is also a cultural spectacle. Colourful processions fill the streets. Saints and sages share spiritual teachings. Songs, rituals, and traditions from across India come together in one place. It is a celebration of faith, culture, and human connection on an unmatched scale.
