International Women’s Day History and Importance

Imagine a world where everyone, no matter who they are, has the same opportunities to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams. That’s the amazing idea behind International Women’s Day! This special day is all about celebrating the incredible achievements of women and girls around the world. It’s a time to recognize their strength, courage, and contributions to society. Long ago, women didn’t have the same rights as men. They couldn’t vote, own property, or even get a good education. But amazing women, like suffragettes who fought for the right to vote, stood up and demanded change.

History Of Women’s Day

In 1908, thousands of women in New York City marched through the streets demanding better working conditions, higher pay, and the right to vote. This was a big deal because women didn’t have many rights back then! The next year, in 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was held in the United States of America. It was organised by the Socialist Party to keep pushing for women’s rights.

In 1910, a woman named Clara Zetkin from Germany had a brilliant idea. She suggested that women from all over the world should celebrate a special day together to fight for their rights. This idea was loved by everyone at the conference in Copenhagen, where women from 17 countries were gathered. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in countries like Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Over a million people joined in! In 1917, something big happened in Russia. Women workers went on strike on March 8th (which was February 23rd on the Russian calendar back then) to demand “Bread and Peace” during World War I. This strike helped start the Russian Revolution! After that, March 8th became a special day to honour women’s roles in history. In 1975, the United Nations officially recognised it as International Women’s Day.

Human Ears Can Move To Hear Better

Even though you probably don’t realise it, your ears try to move when you’re really trying to listen to something! Scientists in Germany did a study and found that tiny muscles in our ears twitch when we’re concentrating on a sound, especially if it’s hard to hear.

It’s like your ears are trying to point towards the sound to hear it better, just like animals do! Previously, scientists thought the muscle used to wiggle your ears was essentially useless. The scientists think this is because way, way back in time, our ancestors could actually move their ears to focus on sounds. But over millions of years, we lost that ability.

However, the brain signals that tell our ears to move are still there! The lead scientist called it a “neural fossil”, like a leftover bit of our ancient brains. To prove this, they played audiobooks to a group of adults, and the scientists made the task easier or harder by playing podcasts at the same time. The team found that the ear muscles were more active when people had to work harder to listen. Even though most people can’t wiggle their ears on purpose, the study shows our brains still remember how to try! It’s like a secret superpower your ears have, even if you don’t know it!

Bennu A Space Rock Full Of Life’s Secrets!

Our solar system is a busy place, filled with planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. But Earth is special – it’s the only place we know where life exists. Scientists have just made an incredible discovery that might change everything! Imagine a giant space rock named Bennu. It’s an asteroid, a rocky leftover from the early days of our solar system. And guess what?

Scientists have found the “basic building blocks” of life inside Bennu! It’s like finding a treasure chest filled with clues about how life began. A NASA spacecraft actually visited Bennu and brought some of it back to Earth in 2023. It was like a cosmic delivery! And when scientists started studying the sample, they were amazed by what they found.

Bennu is packed with organic molecules – the stuff that makes up living things. They even found nucleobases, which are the building blocks of DNA, and amino acids, which make up proteins! DNA is like the instruction manual for life, and proteins are like the workers that build and run everything. It’s like finding the LEGO bricks and the instruction booklet for building a living thing! But that’s not all! Scientists also found minerals and salts in Bennu, which suggests that water might have existed on the asteroid at some point. Water is super important for life as we know it. And they even found ammonia, which is another key ingredient for life.

This doesn’t mean that life actually existed on Bennu. But it does mean that the ingredients for life were floating around in space, just waiting for the right conditions to come together. Scientists think that asteroids like Bennu might have crashed into Earth billions of years ago, bringing these important ingredients with them.

It’s helping us answer some big questions, like how life started and where it came from. And who wouldn’t want to know the answers to those questions? Scientists are also wondering if these same “life ingredients” might have been delivered to other planets by asteroids. Could life exist elsewhere in our solar system? Bennu is giving us some exciting clues!

If the building blocks of life were found on an asteroid, does that mean there could be life on other planets too? What other things besides water and organic molecules do you think are needed for life to exist?
