Scan The Snake: Smart App Helps People Identify Venomous Snakes

Snakes are an important part of nature, yet many people fear them because it can be difficult to tell whether a snake is dangerous or harmless. Around the world, thousands of snakebite cases happen every year simply because people panic or cannot identify the species quickly. A new technology solution is now trying to change that by making snake identification easier and safer for everyone. Researchers in Costa Rica have developed a new mobile app that can identify venomous snakes, helping people respond calmly and safely when they encounter one in the wild.

Costa Rica launches snake identification app to improve safety:

The app was developed by the Clodomiro Picado Institute at the University of Costa Rica. It allows users to scan or compare snakes and quickly access reliable scientific information about different species. The application can help identify around 25 venomous snake species found in Costa Rica. It also shows side-by-side comparisons with harmless snakes, helping users avoid confusion and unnecessary fear. Many harmless snakes are often killed because people mistake them for dangerous ones, so the tool also supports wildlife protection.

The app includes clear photographs, species descriptions, and first-aid guidance for snakebites, giving people quick instructions on what to do in an emergency. Experts say this can help people stay calm, take the right steps after a bite, and seek medical help quickly. Scientists created the tool because snake encounters often lead to panic. When people misidentify snakes, they may harm wildlife or put themselves in danger by reacting incorrectly. By offering fast, accurate information, the new app aims to protect both humans and snakes while improving public understanding of these animals.
