Reading a newspaper each day has long been one of the simplest ways to stay informed about the world. Newspapers help children understand current events, improve their language skills and develop the habit of reading regularly. Recognising these benefits, the Karnataka government has announced a new initiative to encourage students to spend time with print newspapers every day. The programme aims to help students reconnect with reading while also reducing excessive screen time by bringing newspaper reading back into daily classroom routines.
New rule introduces 10-minute newspaper reading time in Karnataka schools
The Government of Karnataka and the Department of School Education and Literacy have directed schools across the state to introduce a daily newspaper reading session for students. Under the new rule, students will spend at least 10 minutes every day reading a Kannada newspaper, the primary language spoken in the state. The programme will apply to government schools, aided schools, private schools, residential hostels and child-care institutions across Karnataka. Education officials say the initiative is designed to help children build a strong reading habit, improve vocabulary, strengthen writing skills and stay informed about current affairs in India and around the world.
Officials also believe the initiative will encourage students to engage more with print media instead of spending excessive time on digital devices and social media. By reading newspapers regularly, students can learn about important developments in politics, science, sports, environment and society while also improving their understanding of language and communication. The move reflects a wider effort by education authorities to promote reading culture in schools and help students develop stronger knowledge and critical thinking skills through exposure to real-world news.
