The results help governments understand what makes cities healthier, happier, and more comfortable for people. For the second year in a row, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, has been named the world’s most livable city in the 2026 Economist Intelligence Unit Global Livability Index.
Copenhagen named the world’s most livable city for 2026
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked 173 cities from around the world based on how safe, comfortable, and easy they are to live in. The rankings were based on five key categories:
- Stability, including safety and security
- Healthcare
- Culture and environment
- Education
- Infrastructure, such as transport and public services
Copenhagen achieved an impressive 98 out of 100, earning the top position for the second consecutive year. The cities that completed the top five were:
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Vienna, Austria
- Melbourne, Australia
- Sydney, Australia
- Zurich, Switzerland
Experts say Copenhagen performs exceptionally well because of its excellent public transport, high-quality healthcare, strong education system, clean environment, and safe neighbourhoods. The city is also famous for its extensive cycling network, green spaces, and focus on sustainable living.
What is the Global Livability Index?
The Global Livability Index is an annual report published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). It compares cities across the world to measure how suitable they are for everyday life. The report helps governments, businesses, and researchers understand which cities offer the best quality of life and where improvements may be needed.
