Food experts explain that these dishes are grouped under the global pancake category because they are made by spreading batter on a hot surface, just like pancakes around the world. However, what makes Indian versions special is their variety of ingredients, fermentation methods, textures, and flavours. For example, dosas are usually made from fermented rice and lentil batter, while appams have a soft centre with crispy edges. Malpua, on the other hand, is a sweet pancake often enjoyed during festivals.

Across the world, similar dishes include French crêpes, Chinese jianbing, and Latvian potato pancakes. This global recognition highlights how Indian regional foods are gaining popularity internationally, with their unique taste and traditional cooking methods standing out on the world stage.
