Tamil poet Vairamuthu wins Jnanpith Award 2025:

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Vairamuthu has written poetry collections, novels, essays and more than 7,000 Tamil film songs, making him one of the most recognised literary voices in Tamil culture. With this honour, Vairamuthu becomes only the third Tamil writer to receive the award after renowned authors Akilan and Jayakanthan. His works often explore themes such as nature, rural life, social change and human emotions, connecting deeply with readers and listeners.
After the announcement, Vairamuthu said the honour belongs not only to him but also to the Tamil language and its rich literary heritage. What is the Award?
The Jnanpith Award is India’s highest literary honour, given each year to an author for outstanding contribution to literature in any Indian language. It was established in 1961 by the organisation Bharatiya Jnanpith based in New Delhi. The award recognises excellence in poetry, novels, essays and plays that enrich India’s literary and cultural heritage. Winners receive a bronze statue of Vagdevi, the Goddess of Speech, along with a cash prize of ₹11 lakh.
