Extreme Heatwave: 95 Of The World’s 100 Hottest Cities Are In India

The heatwave in India has become one of the biggest weather stories this summer. Temperatures are rising sharply across many parts of the country, with dozens of cities experiencing extreme heat much earlier than usual. Weather data from global monitoring platforms has shown something striking: 95 of the world’s 100 hottest cities are currently in India, highlighting how intense the heat has become across the region. The India Meteorological Department (“IMD”) has also warned that summer 2026 could be unusually severe, with extreme temperatures already recorded in April. Several cities across northern and central India have seen thermometers climb close to 46-48°C, raising concerns about heat safety, water supply, and public health.

Indian Cities Recording Some Of The Highest Temperatures:

Across India, many cities have reported scorching conditions during the ongoing heatwave. Some of the hottest cities recently recorded:

  • Banda, Uttar Pradesh: around 47.6°C
  • Amravati, Maharashtra: around 46.6°C
  • Wardha, Maharashtra: around 46.5°C

In Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, cities such as Akola, Amravati, and Wardha have repeatedly recorded temperatures between 46°C and 47°C, with some places approaching or breaking decades-old heat records.

Why Is India Experiencing Such Extreme Heat?

Scientists say several factors are combining to make the heatwave stronger. Key reasons include:

  • Dry winds and clear skies that trap heat near the ground
  • Urban heat island effect, where concrete buildings and roads absorb and hold heat
  • Climate change, which is increasing global temperatures and making heatwaves more frequent and intense

Together, these conditions create long periods of very high temperatures across large parts of the country.

What is a heatwave?

A heatwave is a long stretch of extremely hot weather. In India, the IMD declares a heatwave when temperatures in the plains rise above 40°C and remain significantly higher than normal for several days.
