India’s Biodiversity Grows: 709 New Animal Species Found

India’s forests, mountains, rivers, and oceans are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Every year, scientists explore these habitats to discover species that have never been recorded before. These discoveries help us better understand nature and show why protecting ecosystems is so important. In 2025, India made another exciting leap in biodiversity research, with hundreds of new animal species and plant taxa added to the country’s official records. The discoveries highlight India’s rich natural heritage and the important work of scientists studying its wildlife.

Hundreds of new animal species added to India’s biodiversity records

The latest figures were released by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), two government organisations that study the country’s plants and animals. According to the reports, scientists documented:

Animals: 709

483 new to science

226 first-time records in India

Plants: 353

New plant taxa recorded

A species new to science is one that has never been identified or described anywhere in the world before. A first-time record in India means the species was already known globally but has now been found in India for the first time.

What kinds of new animal species and more were discovered?

The discoveries covered a remarkable range of living things, including:

  • Insects
  • Spiders
  • Fishes
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
  • Flowering plants
  • Ferns
  • Fungi
  • Lichens
  • Algae
  • Microbes

Each discovery helps scientists understand ecosystems better and supports efforts to protect endangered habitats.

Which states recorded the most discoveries?

Kerala recorded the highest number of new animal species, with 98 discoveries. It was followed by:

  • West Bengal: 76 species
  • Karnataka: 67 species
  • Arunachal Pradesh: 65 species

Many of these discoveries were made in the Western Ghats and the Eastern Himalayas, two of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. These regions are famous for their unique wildlife, much of which is found nowhere else on Earth.

Why is India called a megadiverse country?

India is one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries. These nations contain most of Earth’s plant and animal species despite covering only a small part of the planet’s land area. From snow-covered Himalayan peaks and dense rainforests to deserts, wetlands, mangroves, and coral reefs, India’s wide range of habitats supports an extraordinary variety of life. Scientists continue to discover new species every year, showing that many parts of nature still have secrets waiting to be uncovered.
