Dreaming of becoming an astronaut takes years of hard work, learning, and determination. While many astronauts begin their careers as pilots or scientists, some bring together skills from several different fields. Anil Menon is one such person. A doctor, engineer, pilot, and astronaut, he is now preparing for one of the biggest moments of his career. NASA has announced that Anil Menon will launch on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a proud milestone for the Indian-origin astronaut and inspiring young space enthusiasts around the world.
Who is Anil Menon?
Anil Menon is a NASA astronaut of Indian origin, an emergency medicine physician, a mechanical engineer, and a colonel in the United States Space Force. He was selected as part of NASA’s 2021 Astronaut Candidate Class and officially joined the astronaut corps in 2022. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Menon has an Indian father and a Ukrainian mother. His impressive academic journey includes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology from Harvard University
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Stanford Medical School
From doctor to astronaut
Before becoming an astronaut, Menon built an extraordinary career. He worked as an emergency medicine physician, treating patients in critical situations. He also served as a NASA flight surgeon, helping keep astronauts healthy during space missions. Later, he became SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, where he helped prepare astronauts for the company’s first human spaceflights, including the historic Demo-2 mission. His unique combination of medical knowledge, engineering expertise, and space operations made him an ideal candidate for NASA’s astronaut programme.
When will Anil Menon launch into space?
NASA has announced that Anil Menon will launch aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft on July 14, 2026, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. He will travel alongside Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. This will be his first journey to space.
The crew is expected to spend around eight months aboard the International Space Station, where they will become part of Expedition 74/75 before returning to Earth in April 2027.
What will he do on the International Space Station?
During his mission, Menon will take part in several important scientific experiments designed to improve life on Earth and prepare astronauts for future missions to the Moon and Mars. His work will include:
- Studying how blood flows in space.
- Testing new medical technologies using artificial intelligence and augmented reality.
- Researching how semiconductor crystals grow in microgravity for future high-performance computers.
- Helping scientists improve bioprinting techniques that could support future medical treatments.
What is the International Space Station?
The International Space Station (ISS) is a large laboratory that orbits Earth about 400 kilometres above the planet. Astronauts from different countries live and work there, carrying out scientific experiments that cannot be performed on Earth because of microgravity. The ISS has been continuously occupied by astronauts since 2000, making it one of humanity’s greatest international scientific projects.
