A footballer with roots in Goa has created history on the world’s biggest football stage. Uruguay winger Maximiliano Araújo became the first player of Indian origin to score a goal in FIFA World Cup history when he found the net against Saudi Arabia during Uruguay’s opening Group H match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. His late goal helped Uruguay secure a 1-1 draw after the South American side had fallen behind earlier in the game. For football fans in India, the goal carried special significance. Reports suggest that Araújo’s family traces its roots to Loutolim, a village in South Goa. His grandfather is believed to have emigrated from Goa before the family eventually settled in Uruguay.
